Acknowledged as one of the premier hotel locations at 160 Central Park South between Sixth and Seventh Avenues in New York City and home to A-List celebrities like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Jude Law, and Samuel L. Jackson, the JW Marriott Ess Essex House was a welcome surprise – in more ways than one.
I chose the JW Marriott Essex House as a weekend excursion after reading many great reviews of the property. With stately chandeliers, elevators of yesteryear, and Art Deco accouterments the property is reminiscent of Carey Grant. I was impressed with the politeness and sheer efficiency of the staff, the cleanliness of the public space and rooms, and the ability to implement modern conveniences without losing stately appeal. The Bellmen – were excellent and speedily hurried me off when needed. The Front Desk Staff – was excellent and delivered a room exacting to my request. The Concierge – is excellent and capable of rescheduling my Thursday dinner in Soho to my new choice in Times Square in minutes! I couldn’t have asked for more, anywhere.
However, if I must detract from this impressive property (and I must if I am, to be honest), I noted a few things that simply surprised me. The shower spout, stainless steel in all its complex glory, was not grouted or sealed. Upon adjusting the spray of water it was nearly pulled through the wall. Another interesting discovery is the ceiling paint spanning the entire bathroom peeling from the ceiling at every apex. Simple corrections yes, but with such attention to detail elsewhere, it is dismaying (and surprising) that unsightly things like this remain. A level of forgiveness is, of course, due to this being a renovated icon dating back to 1931.
Large corridors and spacious visitor spaces. Inviting rooms with all that one could need: Wi-Fi, next-generation telephones, etc. affording ease of comfort and use. It also goes without saying the location is also ideal overlooking Central Park in the heart of Manhattan; elegance one would expect of this location. There is little wonder why Hollywood and so many others choose the JW Essex House.
I recommend a visit to this renovated jewel and look forward to my next stay.
